Gum grafting is a dental surgery that Dr. Bikhazi and her team offer to reduce a receding gumline. She and her team use allograft tissue from a donor, or tissues from other areas of your mouth, to complete the procedure.
Allograft tissue is human tissue donated for human medical purposes. It’s tissue from anyone other than an identical twin.
Having healthy gums is the best way to prevent loose permanent teeth and tooth loss.
Gum grafting offers you many benefits, including:
Dr. Bikhazi and her team personalize each gum grafting treatment to give you the best, natural-looking results.
To find out if you’re a candidate for gum grafting, Dr. Bikhazi and her staff review your oral health history and examine your gums and teeth. They also take dental X-rays, discuss your desired outcome, and let you know what to expect during treatment.
To prepare for gum grafting, arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure. Don’t smoke and stop taking specific medications if Dr. Bikhazi recommends it. Right before treatment, she numbs the area and offers you a sedative so that you remain comfortable.
Dr. Bikhazi gently inserts donor tissue or tissue from other parts of your mouth, often from the roof of your mouth, into areas of receding gums. Afterward, she can stitch your new gumline into place.
After a gum grafting procedure, you can go home the same day, but plan to have a friend or family member drive you there. Follow all post-surgical instructions.
Take medications as prescribed, ice the treatment area as needed, use a special mouthwash if Dr. Bikhazi recommends it, and avoid strenuous exercise until she gives you the OK. Follow a soft-food diet initially.
Healing might take several weeks, but every patient is different. You can usually return to work the following day. Attend your follow-up appointments with Dr. Bikhazi to make sure your gums heal properly.
If you don’t like the look of receding gums and/or you’d like to prevent permanent tooth loss, see Vanessa Bikhazi, DDS, and her team to find out if gum grafting is right for you. Call the office today or use the online scheduler.
